The timber Certificate of Origin of Europe and the United States are recognized by importing kitchenware countries, so we could say it’s also an advantage for manufacturers to export the wood products including wooden doors, cabinets and furniture.

Why your kitchen sink might be dirtier than your loo

A new study from a group of environmental scientists suggests the average family kitchen can contain more harmful germs than the bathroom, according to the news agency Associated Press. The scientists, working on behalf of a cleaning products manufacturer, took samples from 20 family homes in seven regions including the UK - and their findings were alarming. Internationally, 90 per cent of kitchen cloths, 46 per cent of kitchen sinks, 38 per cent of bathroom sinks and 14 per cent of children’s toys had a total bacteria count of more than 100,000 per square centimetre.Professor John Oxford, a virologist at St Bartholemew’s and the Royal London Hospital, led the study. He is also chairman of the UK’s Hygiene Council - read its recommendations here.

He warned that families put great effort into cleaning toilets but not nearly as much time into keeping their kitchens clean: “You could eat your dinner in a US toilet but there is a lack of appreciation that kitchen sinks can be contaminated with faecal organisms, either coming in with fruit and vegetables or from pets and children.”The moral of this tale? Wash your hands regularly and thoroughly. Disinfect high-risk areas. Dispense with all your horrible old cleaning cloths and replace them, as this is where many of the nasties live.

Chopping board health slur ad banned

A television advertisement claiming that chopping boards hold 50 times more bacteria than toilet seats has been banned. Announcing its adjudication today, the Advertising Standards Authority said that Reckitt Benckiser's ad for Dettol Surface Cleanser "misleadingly exaggerated the dangers posed by the bacteria on chopping boards".The ad showed pieces of fruit and a knife on a toilet seat and was accompanied by a voice-over saying: "Fact: your chopping board harbours 50 times more bacteria than your toilet seat. But Dettol Surface Cleanser kills 99.9% of bacteria, including MRSA, E Coli, salmonella and even the flu virus."

However, the ASA criticized the 2004 study for being carried out on only five households, and was "not convinced that the hygiene conditions of the houses were representative of those in most households".It also said it was common knowledge that raw meat could contaminate a surface with bacteria and that it would need to be cleaned before being used again. The authority also thought the ad implied that MRSA, E Coli, salmonella and flu would be present on most chopping boards after cleaning. The ASA concluded that RB had failed to show that bacteria that posed a health risk had been found on most chopping boards after they had been cleaned normally. The ad cannot now be broadcast again in its original format.

A store that gives new life to old kitchenware

Visitors to the store are sometimes put off by the prices. After all, they say, most of the stuff is used.
A few years ago, I was surprised to find a price tag from Goodwill on the bottom of a tin pan I had picked up at the store. Goodwill's price was half what I paid. I put this down to paying for Kaminsky's knowledge. Think of it this way: She goes to Goodwill (or more likely, buys from someone who goes to Goodwill), so you don't have to. Prices also depend on the item. A new Pyrex 2-cup glass measuring cup costs $5, the same as at retail stores. But other items are a bargain, if they don't sell out before you get there.

Are there any items she's so fond of she secretly wishes no one will buy them? If that happens, she just takes them home, she admits. At the moment, though, her own stove is for sale. In remodeling the kitchen of her Haight district flat, she doesn't have room for the beautiful old French stove she bought a few years ago. At $5,000, the stove is the most expensive item on the floor, but it was never assembled. One half is in the back of the store, the other toward the front; both are covered with other items. "The tag isn't really visible. I kind of like having it around," she admits. "I don't really hide it," she adds with a gleeful smile. She gestures toward the top half, a gorgeous piece covered with painted tiles in a green and pink floral pattern. "Isn't it pretty?"

Outfit Kitchen Like a Pro

Where to start when you don’t typically cook or bake? Davis suggested first choosing one basic cookbook such as a recent reprint of the Betty Crocker or “Better Homes & Gardens” cookbooks that were popular in the 1950’s and ’60s. Or, test kitchen Web sites and children’s cookbooks offer excellent pictures, guides to measuring and methods. To outfit the kitchen, we asked Davis and Karen Blakeslee, Kansas State University Research and Extension food scientist, to survey kitchenware departments and make recommendations to stock a basic kitchen. Their suggestions included:

Start building a basic set of pots and pans, including 1-, 2-, and 3-quart saucepans, a skillet and Dutch oven. Pans should have lids and securely attached heat-resistant handles. The two food professionals recommended heavy-gauge stainless steel, which conducts heat evenly. A heavier gauge (and reinforced steel bottom) typically prevents a pan from bending or warping. Choose a skillet to match family size, such as an 8- to 10-inch skillet for one or two or a 10- to12-inch skillet for a family of four or more. The two women recommended a skillet with a lid, either of cast iron or stainless steel. Larger skillets may have an optional handle opposite the pan handle to steady the pan when lifting it or pouring from it.

"'World-class shopper' and Partner Open Kitchenware Store With a Little Help From Their Friends"

Babcock and some of his ex-students will be among the instructors, including former Ritz-Carlton chef Norm Vasquez and Glenn Hoekstra, who previously taught at the Culinary Center of Monterey. (Babcock's parents, John and Barbara Babcock of Seaside, are helping out on the retail side of the establishment.) Classes will range from the very basic on up, with Babcock intending to give home cooks a good education in such things as making sauces and stock. He's also inviting local chefs to get into the act."I'll open up the kitchen to any chef," Babcock said. "They can do demonstrations and give out menus to their restaurants if they want." He is building a similar community spirit into the way he runs the store.

But Babcock says he will only have the best of the best in his shop. "If it's junk, I won't sell it...honesty is the message of our store," he said. Quality goods, like Vietri tableware from Italy, Riedel crystal from Austria, Scanpan pots and pans from Denmark, Mason Cash bowls from England ("just like the ones Martha uses") and Lamson knives from Massachusetts line the shelves at Clementine's.But there are plenty of simple pleasures as well, like chrome spiral egg cups - only $1.50 each. And Babcock invites people to ask questions and try things out so they can get exactly what they want.
